Title: Minyas no Ojousan
Subject: The Daughters of Minyas
Artist: Bryan Whitehead
Artist’s statement: I’m fascinated by the challenges of visually translating folk tales from one culture to another. Ovid translated tales from Greece into the (fairly similar) culture of Rome. Here I’m adapting The Daughters of Minas from the Mediterranean to the (fairly dissimilar) culture of Japan. My inspiration for this piece is the work of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, particularly his prints based on ghost stories from Japan and China. I combined elements from four of his prints with a little customization of my own to create this picture.
